On its tenth anniversary, the VideoFest is changing its name to transmedia. A look at the programme makes it obvious why: for the third time running, the festival is focusing on multimedia, innovative television and video. This year, again, we are integrating technological developments and philosophical discourses relevant to these media realms into the programme: brain research, neuroaesthetics, nanotechnology, and a (self-)critical debate on the inflationary multiplicity of futuristic discourses.

festival catalog preface

It is becoming increasingly difficult to keep track o f the surge of media developments and discourses and to filter out what is appropriate for presentation at a festival. Particularly if – like us – you aspire to look primarily at the interplay and synergy effects between the individual media territories in a critical light.

It seems almost as if the multiplication of forms of expression through multimedia has done less to merge creative forces and more to create a new segmentation into yet another specialism.

This poses a challenge for us: to adopt a predominantly "transmedia" perspective and to initiate crosssectoral discourses. To be able to live up to our aspirations o f taking a wideangled view, we have worked with various experts right from the conception phase of our programme and have once again succeeded in attracting a number of renowned professionals to the individual events.

The new festival date is an experiment: we are stepping out o f the shadow of the celebrated Berlin film festival, the Berlinale, for the benefit of our audience, who will now no longer be spoilt for choice because too much is on at the same time. During three of the festival days, the Digital Media World and Internet World trade fairs will be on at the Berlin trade fair grounds, offering visitors the opportunity to become familiar with state-of-the-art equipment for producing transmedia work.

Amid so much change, some things have to remain the same, so for the fifth time running the festival will take place in Podewil, which now houses our daily operations, as well. transmedia '97 - 10th VideoFest: CD-ROMs, videos, Internet projects, seminars, TV productions, debates, exhibits, retrospectives, workshops, experimental, documentary, and artistic work - we hope for a good response and wish everyone a transmedia time.

programme overview

transmedia ‘97, like previous iterations of the festival, was divided into several sections: Spot (Critical Discourse on the Media on selected days), Focus (Special Programs and Discourse), Primetime (International videos), Media Art Installations Explore! Multimedia Exhibition, Nightflight (videos and Performances from 22.30 onwards), and the Latenight video screening shows. Through these sections, the festival also integrated technological developments and philosophical discourses relevant to these media realms into the programme: brain research, neuroaesthetics, nanotechnology and a (self-) critical debate on the inflationary multiplicity of futuristic discourses.
