2026 coExistence Residency
in collaboration with HEK and Pleamar

Laura Benech is the artist-in-residence for the coExistence Residency in collaboration with HEK (Basel, Switzerland) and Pleamar (Mar del Plata, Argentina), with the support of Pro Helvetia. During her residency, Laura will investigate the concept of latency within entangled systems and how they shape the experience of coexistence between human and synthetic agents.

Exploring how human and synthetic agents can meet, interact, and imagine futures together, coExistence – Encounters of Human and Sythetic Agents reframes synthetic worlds as spaces for empathy, dialogue, and mutual invention. It asks how artists and researchers can open up possibilities for trust, curiosity, and shared agency together with machines, artefacts, bots, and other forms of artificial intelligence. The collaborative project offers three artists the opportunity for the production of a new work and an on-site residency in one of the partner institutions. The coExistence residents are Laura Cugusi, hosted by Pleamar, and Simone C. Niquille, hosted by HEK. Laura Benech will be hosted by transmediale. Read more about the project .

Emergence: Hidden States and Other Worlds

Emergence: Hidden States and Other Worlds is a research project investigating a technological systems whose operation is based on the continuous re-differentiation of entangled systems, making visible what escapes formalisation within experiences of coexistence. Artificial intelligence is not deployed here to interpret or represent the world, but to modulate the conditions under which phenomena emerge. Rather than mapping inputs to outputs, the system distributes events across time through variable latencies, feedback loops, and non-linear dependencies that resist stable states.

The notion of latency is the project's backbone – not as a technical delay to be optimised, but as a structural condition of emergence and a lived temporality that sustains multiple, asynchronous rhythms. Drawing on neuroscience's understanding of how delayed signals are integrated into a coherent present, the research explores what becomes possible when temporal discrepancies are sustained rather than resolved.

The project will be developed over the coming months as part of the coExistence Residency programme, working toward an installative element combining structurally modulated latency, performative visualisations, and robotic agents.
