Variable Name

Variable Name / Назва змінна is an artistic and curatorial duo founded by Maryna Marynychenko and Valerie Karpan. Their practice unfolds at the intersection of participatory art and non-formal education, with a focus on communication and exchange within urban environments, multisensory experience, and practices of memory and commemoration. They explore how social bonds are formed, how local narratives represent memory and loss, and how multisensory anthropology can become a method of engagement.

Maryna and Valerie have collaborated with cultural institutions in Ukraine, Poland, Germany, and Portugal. Their project Trust Room was featured in the art program of Brave Factory Festival (2021); the installation Stay in Touch was presented at the WRO Biennale — Human Aspect (2023); the installation So Close You Can Almost Touch It was created as part of the PinchukArtPrize 2025 finalists’ exhibition and their most recent collaborative project investigates the environmental afterlives of Soviet hydraulic infrastructures and the ways infrastructures originally designed to sustain everyday social and political life become technologies of violence under conditions of war.
