This year marks the fourth iteration of the transmediale residency programme. We’re welcoming Anan Fries , Andrea Galano Toro , D'Andrade , Stefan Karrer , and SunJeong Hwang , who will continue working on their projects from transmediale’s home base at silent green. With a focus on research-based practices, the 2025 edition supports projects spanning from critical AI studies to deep internet research wormholes, and more than human-technology relationships. As part of the initial phase of their residencies, the residents already joined us 3 months ago for the last festival. They will now spend the month of June deepening their research at transmediale studio.
Inspired by Luciana Parisi's book Abstract Sex: Philosophy, Biotechnology and the Mutations of Desire, Anan will explore how information technologies and "artificial intelligence" reshape our desires, our sexualities and our understanding of gender from both posthuman and cyberfeminist perspectives. DEEPER THROATS is a post-digital, post-porn deep dive into digital genitalia, digisexuality, gooncaves, endosymbiosis and monstrous AI-generated porn.
Anan Fries is one of the artists-in-residence for the 2025 Digital Art Residency in collaboration with Pro Helvetia.
Stefan’s ongoing project, The Prompt Engineer, examines AI through the lens of human contribution, focusing on how people interact with generative AI and the broader political, economic, and cultural systems surrounding them. From materials gathered from lurking Discord servers, he creates his own poetic formations which build toward a multi-layered and humorous portrait of the current "AI summer".
Stefan Karrer is one of the artists-in-residence for the 2025 Digital Art Residency in collaboration with Pro Helvetia.
Assemblage(s) is a research-based project that speculates on vehicles and models of language-in-kinship with more-than-human companions — from microbes to dust, gut ecologies, and the microbial life embedded within technological devices. Through the repurposing of technological tools such as microscopes, the project explores how practices of observation can shift from measurement and control toward relational, affective modes of sensing.
Andrea Galano Toro is the artist-in-residence for the 2025 Residency Programme in collaboration with the Ministry of the Cultures, Arts and Heritage of Chile.
The ultra-reading method consists of a deep and transdisciplinary analysis of social, environmental and political aspects in a mimesis of what D'Andrade presents with the neurosis of reading. Through the use of the anthropophagic word, D'Andrade proposes a form and language to transcreate through a translating process – absorbing, processing, translating and reorienting semantic practices, using sound and visuality as part of the relational.
D'Andrade is the artist-in-residence for the 2025 Vilém Flusser Residency for Artistic Research in cooperation with the University of the Arts Berlin (UdK).
SunJeong Hwang’s current practice investigates embodied perception and intersensorial feedback, focusing on the pre-cognitive and affective dimensions of rhythm that emerge through the continuous negotiation between body and environment. Central to her work is the reinterpretation of traditional Korean rhythmic and somatic practices, approaching them not as static cultural artifacts, but as living systems of embodied knowledge. During the residency, SunJeong is developing prototypes incorporating sensor networks, ecological data harvesting, and AI-driven compositional processes to build a responsive architecture where rhythms are negotiated across human somatics, algorithmic logic, and planetary conditions.
SunJeong Hwang is the is the artist-in-residence for the 2025 Residency Programme in collaboration with Arts Council Korea.
