conversation pieces: pool edition
transmediale x Tropez

Anna-Lena Panter, Vanessa Oberin, Alona Karavai, conversation pieces: Empathie, 2026

We are happy to announce the upcoming discourse series conversation pieces: pool edition in collaboration with Tropez 🏊🏊

Tropez is an artspace located in the public swimming pool at Humboldthain. During the summer season, Tropez presents an exhibition, performances and discussions alongside the pool.

conversation pieces takes everyday technologies as its starting point and situates them in the context of the swimming pool. Each edition departs from a text that sets the thematic frame and serves as a shared point of reference. Invited guests engage with the topic from artistic, theoretical, or technological perspectives, sharing their thoughts and work in dialogue.

The pool might seem an unlikely setting for such conversations and perhaps that is precisely what makes it a fit. It is a place of pause and hanging out, of outsurfacing, of being alongside others. Here, where we can drift in the water and the gentle sound of splashing forms a steady background hum, the question which technologies carry us and which pull us under is close at hand. How do we navigate the internet, what do we obscure in doing so, and what spaces emerge where we withdraw? What does it mean to hold as a technological as much as a cultural practice? In what ways are container technologies – from the cloud to the archive, from the algorithm to the database – also political spaces? And what possibilities open up when we stop thinking of technology as a tool of conquest and begin to think of it as a vessel?

With Anan Fries, Alona Karavai, Marina Naprushkina, Vanessa Oberin, Noemi Garay Murcia, Marina Naprushkina, and Hannah Wallenfels.

The conversations will be held in German.

The discourse series conversation pieces is a cooperation between Tropez and transmediale, curated by Anna-Lena Panter.
