Announcing transmediale’s 2025 Residents

Concluding the open call period for this year, we and the respective jury members for each programme are pleased to announce the selected projects for the 2025 transmediale Residencies, in collaboration with three international and one local partner:

Anan Fries and Stefan Karrer
Digital Art Residency in collaboration with Pro Helvetia

SunJeong Hwang
transmediale x ARKO Residency

D’Andrade
Vilém Flusser Residency for Artistic Research
in collaboration with the University of the Arts Berlin

Andrea Galano Toro
transmediale x Chile Residency

Anan Fries, Ecto Bag (commercial), 2024

Anan Fries is a transdisciplinary artist working across digital and performing arts practices. Inspired by posthuman and xeno-feminist discourses, their work explores topics such as reproduction, techno-spirituality, and the entanglements of nature and technology. DEEPER THROATS focuses on the disruptive potential of technologies in reshaping traditional understandings of gender, sexuality, and reproduction. The residency research investigates how virtual genitalia can act as agents of re-imagination and symbols of mutating (post)human desire. Drawing from the Post-Porn movement and referencing the 1974 film “Deep Throat”, the project moves toward creating a VR-essay on Artificial Sexuality. Anan is based in Basel and Berlin.

Stefan Karrer, The Prompt Engineer, 2025

Stefan Karrer is a transdisciplinary artist whose practice spans experimental writing, artistic research, audiovisual installations, and performances. His work explores the poetics and politics of internet culture. For the residency, Stefan examines AI through the lens of human contribution, focusing on how people interact with AI and the broader political, economic, and cultural systems surrounding them. His research includes studying Discord and the AI-generated imagery styles influenced by popular online genres like Fantasy and Anime. Using strategies of world-building and experimental writing, The Prompt Engineer builds toward a multi-layered hypertext poem, portraying the "AI summer" through the perspective of human users. Stefan is based in Vienna, Austria.

Both projects for the 3rd iteration of the Digital Arts Residency in collaboration with the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia were selected by Johannes Bruder, Giulia Bini, and Anna-Lena Panter for transmediale.

SunJeong Hwang, Telluric Memories: Warm Woven Clicks and Entangled Radiant, 2024

SunJeong Hwang is a contemporary artist and new media composer who works at the interplay between post-humanism, technology, and ecological systems. Through interdisciplinary research, she synthesizes sound, AI, generative coding, and audiovisual installations, weaving together organic and technological elements. Rooted in new media ecology, digital spirituality practices, and Korean shamanic traditions, Telluric Memories: Warm Woven Clicks, and Entangled Radiant explores how the integrated complex of nature and technology can inspire the liberation of the senses. Hwang's transdisciplinary artistic practice connects extensive research on mycelium and expands into a broader reflection on symbiotic relationships, neuroscience, oral histories from Korean elders, and traditional movement research and sound practices to explore how memory and cognition persist through trauma. The project for the newly launched collaboration of the transmediale x ARKO Residency was selected by jury members Ayoung Kim, Keumhwa Kim, and Anna-Lena Panter for transmediale.

D' Andrade, Installation, Akademie der Künste Berlin

D’Andrade is a self-taught visual artist, musician, and poet working within trans-afro-futurism. Their artistic practice encompasses sound design, coding, archiving, and electronic games, centering Black and queer perspectives, climate change, and the impact of technology on Black thought. The ultra-reading method engages with Vilém Flusser's text Art, Artefato, e Artimanha, originally written for the 18th São Paulo Biennial in 1985, using translation as an anthropophagic process – one that consumes and transforms texts to produce new critical and creative interpretations. This project deepens D’Andrade’s ongoing Ultra Poetry research, which investigates the creation of language through artificial, conceptual, and technological means. Focusing on the philosophical dimensions of image-making in the age of AI, the project explores how art functions as language. The 13th iteration of the Vilém Flusser residency for Artistic Research was open to Berlin-based artists and researchers. The project was selected by jury members Mirjana Mitrović, Sara Morais dos Santos Bruss, and Anna-Lena Panter for transmediale.

Andrea Galano Toro, De Allá pa acá, 2022

Andrea Galano Toro is an audiovisual artist, graphic designer, and researcher whose practice explores storytelling as a catalyst for transformational experiences. Through audiovisual installations, graphic works, performances, workshops, and lectures, Andrea’s work merges technology and natural materials. Assemblages expands an interactive installation with performative elements, examining the relationships between humans, the gut microbiome, and the ecosystems we inhabit. By transforming data from soil and biomes into real-time sonic and visual dialogues, the project aims to create an immersive sensory experience and technologies. Assemblages further deepens Andrea’s research interest in ecologies and symbiosis as well as the experimentation with different materialities. Andrea is currently based in Barcelona. The project for the 3rd iteration of the transmediale x Chile Residency in collaboration with the Ministry of the Cultures, Arts and Heritage of Chile and DIRAC – Division for Cultures, Arts, Heritage and Public Diplomacy Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile was selected by the jury members Francisco González-Rosas, Daniela Arriado, and Anna-Lena Panter for transmediale.

transmediale Residency Programme

The 2025 residencies support research-based practices that build on existing projects or develop new ones in fields such as media studies, science and technology studies, media art and theory, art criticism, digital art, and moving image practices. The programme offers participants a two-month hybrid residency: four weeks of remote work followed by one month on-site at transmediale’s studio space in Berlin in June 2025.

As a core part of transmediale’s activities, the residency programme focuses on supporting sustainable practices and long-term relationships with artists, emphasising a process-oriented approach rather than output-driven presentations. By bringing together diverse disciplines and practices, the programme aims to expand transmediale’s local and international networks and the festival’s community.

transmediale has been funded as a cultural institution of excellence by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation) since 2004.
