The seventh issue of transmediale’s journal, Content, traces the mutation of its eponymous subject as both concept and material condition into and throughout contemporary digital culture. The journal examines content’s evolution from discrete entity to ambient force through critical essays, artistic interventions, monologues, and theoretical frameworks. By weaving together Su Yu Hsin’s analysis of commodified water systems, Shaka McGlotten’s observations of pandemic screen culture, and Farida Amadou’s boundary-dissolving performances, this issue provides a view of how content operates as both the container and the contained. Visual contributions from Jaakko Pallasvuo and Nicolás Jaar’s fragmentary, flooded archives are brought into dialogue with Emele Ugavule’s Tokelauan Uvean Fijian storytelling practice, offering multiple entry points into understanding how content has become an infrastructure of contemporary experience, simultaneously structuring our relationship to information while flowing through and beyond traditional boundaries of containment. This Content provides grounds on which we can stand, even share, for much-needed discussions on how to move from surrender to resistance.
