In a hardening political climate fuelled by escalating conflicts, post-truth media, and the rise of techno-feudalism, the cultural sector faces mounting threats to its existence and, increasingly, its history. As festivals are forced to scale back or shut down entirely, their contributions are lost to degrading social platforms, AI noise, and data monopolies. Over the past two years, MUTEK Montréal and seven international festivals explored the state of our cultural infrastructure and new ways of building solidarity through the Future Festivals project. In this closed transmediale session, MUTEK’s Maurice Jones and HOLO & NODE Forum for Digital Arts’ Alexander Scholz will share their findings and kick off a much-needed conversation on preserving our cultural memory.
