Saba Arat

Saba Arat is a Turkey-born, Berlin-based artist who hand weaves Kilims and rugs and works at the intersection of textile practices, sound, visuals, and interactive systems. Her practice explores weaving as both an ancestral technology and a contemporary interface.

Using traditional weaving techniques and looms, Saba works with wool taken apart from old carpets sourced across different regions of Turkey. She weaves each piece herself while embedding conductive steel fibers, sensors, and custom electronics directly into the textile structure. These woven surfaces become responsive instruments and media controllers, capable of generating or controlling sound, video, light, and data through touch, pressure, and proximity.

Drawing from long-term research in Anatolia, Saba focuses on non-written knowledge passed between generations of weavers. She approaches Kilims as tools for communication, ritual, and relational exchange that predate and exceed digital technologies. Her work moves between installation, performance, and collective interaction.
