Tecnomilpa: the art of growing technologies together, in relation. This workshop practices it through collective making as ritual. Throughout the day, a painting *sculpture grows from natural pigments, totomoxtle (corn husk), and the labour of everyone present. We will pause to have space for sharing food from our hometown: Quebrantadero, Axochiapan, Morelos, Mexico.
Tecnomilpa means tending our own infrastructure, too; how we reach each other, on our own terms. Each person takes home an ESP32 LoRa device, a small board that sends encrypted messages up to 2.8km in open terrain, hopping from device to device without internet, cell towers, or central servers watching. If you are organising in community or seeking ways to communicate beyond corporate and state systems, this space is for you.
After the gathering, the painting*sculpture can travel to those who wish to host it, carrying with it an invitation: to gather, to make together, to share food. A shared digital platform will hold today’s stories and trace how these mesh networks are growing across geographies.
This workshop is not included in the passes and requires an additional ticket, available for €5–20 (sliding scale). Limited spots available. Find the link to register below.
This event is a cooperation between Winchester School of Art at the University of Southampton and transmediale.
