Lara Tabet, Resilience Overflow, Installation at transmediale 2026

Resilience Overflow speculates around releasing a strain of the gut bacteria Citrobacter alamoniticum – isolated from the artist’s intestinal flora and genetically modified to express and produce the Human Neuropeptide Y Gene that confers resistance to post traumatic stress disorder – into the Beirut water system; thus questioning resilience as a political pretext and looking at the role of the individual in the absence of the state as well as possible modes of alliances between humans and non-humans.

Accompanying the projection of Resilience Overflow, fluorescent carbonated drinks are served. The drinks are made with the fermentation of sugar by water kefir grains consisting of complex symbiotic mixtures of bacteria and yeasts including Lactobacillus, Liquorilactobacillus, Lacticaseibacillus, Lentilactobacillus, Leuconostoc, Lactococcus, Acetobacter, Gluconobacter, Oenococcus, Clostridium, Zymomonas and Saccharomyces. These microbes provide gut health benefits by producing postbiotics. Water kefir grains can grow, multiply and distribute when properly when cared for. The fluorescence comes from adding Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) a compound naturally present in foods, added to foods, and available as a supplement synthesized by the bacterium Bacillus subtilis.

For the presentation of the installation at transmediale, Lara Tabet received support from Ettijahat—Independent Culture, in the framework of the programme Zad: Miles for Connection.
