Zachary Furste is a media artist and Lecturer in New Media and Digital Culture at the University of Amsterdam, where he is also a systems developer at the Digital Methods Initiative. He investigates the material politics of digital infrastructure through projects that build the systems they critique: compost.cc (with Diego Gómez-Venegas), a peer-to-peer archival network running on restored devices; i-o.tv, a website that animates its own server access logs; thermostat.tv, which heats his Berlin studio by streaming images to web visitors; and postal.media, a meta-archive drawing on over thirty institutional collections via IIIF. He is completing a book, Bare Metal: Material and Abstraction in Computing, a history and theorization of the virtualization techniques behind cloud infrastructure. He holds a PhD in media history from Harvard and has held fellowships at Berlin’s Humboldt University, USC, and Carnegie Mellon.
