The festival presents a discursive and performance programme exploring a range of approaches towards alternative technological futures. Bringing embodied reflection to questions that resist analysis and critique alone, groundstates keeps the human scale of technology to bring forward new forms of collective stewardship. It looks at the subterranean currents of imagination that build collective stories, rabbit holes and speculations of the communities populating semi-shadowed worlds. It centres around how they carve out autonomous spaces and articulate shared languages to organise, resist, and live otherwise.

groundstates describe a moment of lowest energy before a network is activated. It is a state of rest before eruption, in which imagination is at its peak and a sense of possibility gathers in the background.

This year’s festival features three keynote conversations in which thinkers articulate this moment of flux: examining the political dimensions of information technologies, proposing alternative governance models, and speculating on infrastructure’s darkest potentials. These keynotes form a backdrop against which the discursive programme can react.

lattice labs

Building towards the festival, the Lattice Labs introduce a process-based approach to collective learning and knowledge dissemination. The Labs are a series of experimental working groups dedicated to rethinking and testing alternatives to technological monocultures of extraction and surveillance. Running in the months before the festival, they bring artists and researchers together for sustained cycles of critical discussion and collaborative making, functioning as infrastructures for collective inquiry.
