This hybrid lecture/music performance by We Are Not Sick a duo consisting of author Geert Lovink and musician John Longwalker, follows on the heels of Lovink’s 2019 book Sad by Design, and reflects on the encroaching sadness provoked by social media architectures. The thesis is based on the demise of DIY approaches to media and networks in the platform age, with its extraction of data for commercial gains. In the algorithmic entanglement of everything, we are left to uphold a diffuse existence in between status updates, giving rise to a new form of sadness resulting from disempowerment. Combining text, image, music genres, this theory show provides a narrative of potential confrontation and reintegration with the social reality of the billions online.
