Which actor would you choose to play your ‘DAD’ in an ongoing-never-ending-durational performance called ‘LIFE’?
In a ridiculous pursuit for connection HOLLLIDAY auditions a group of actors to do just that. DEAD DAD DEATH CULT is a playful exploration of paternal absence with a sizzling undercurrent of malaise. It’s giving laugh-cry-laugh-cry…laugh?
Expect tightly woven chaos, a toybox of surreal voices and one very oblivious lead. All DADs welcome. No participation required.
DEAD DAD DEATH CULT [DDDC] is a (mostly) solo performance exploring how we fill the paternal void. The piece blends live art, character comedy, and confessional theatre, drawing from Samra Mayanja’s experiences in an anarchist eco-commune and the grief following my father's death.
DDDC opens with HOLLLIDAY, a call centre operator tasked with triaging callers' pain. After connecting with a caller who has been bullied out of her utopic home, she reflects on her father’s death. HOLLLIDAY auditions actors to play her dad in an ongoing durational performance. The "DADS" are present in the audience, auditioning and performing their roles. In the middle of an audition, her real father dies, forcing her to reconcile her grief with the callers’ yearning for connection.
Written and performed by artist-writer Samra Mayanja. Featuring Aaron Scott as Aaron Scott.
